"Lack of follow up"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran University Hospital Ayr / Cardiology University Hospital Hairmyres / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I was taken by ambulance 8 months ago to Hairmyers hospital where it transpired, I had had a couple of heart attacks, the cardiologist inserted a stent into my heart and after being treated I was sent home with a letter to return for further treatment and follow up four months later. I was given medication and was under the impression that I would need further stents fitting.

I attended the local hospital- Ayr, where I was informed that they knew all about me and told me I was in a bad way. I asked if anything was going to be done, and was told that I wasn’t on the list.

After further contact with cardiology, it seems that neither Hairmyers nor Ayr hospital have me down for any further treatment yet I know I need further stents fitting.

At one point, about six months after my surgery, I applied for more pills, my GP said he would get in touch with the hospital. I was then told that my medication for my coronary care had been removed. No explanation was given as to why this tablet that I am supposed to take for a year to prevent blood clots was stopped.

The entire situation is ridiculous, I have not been monitored for over a year – not even had my pulse taken!

I received a telephone consultation, but they wouldn’t listen, wouldn’t answer my questions and then the battery died on my phone.

I am paralyzed from the waist down.

I have been back in touch with  Ayr who have told me I am not being monitored even though I need operations, have suggested I go private.

I would just like some answers.

Dear caringmf75

Thank you for taking the time to write to Care Opinion about your recent experience in our Cath Lab at University Hospital Hairmyres. Patients from Ayr Hospital are admitted to Hairmyres for primary PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) which is the emergency treatment of a heart attack by rapidly unblocking a coronary artery to restore blood flow and minimise damage to heart muscles.

On discharge back to Ayr Hospital, all further care is provided by your local hospital team and general practitioner, and I would advise you to make contact with your GP who will be able to discuss your care with you and who may wish to contact the Cardiology Team at Ayr Hospital on your behalf.

I was sorry to learn of the difficulties you have experienced following discharge from hospital, and would hope that the issues you have raised will be addressed once you make contact with your general practitioner.
