Amazing support and care of Dr.Wah & team at St. James’ University Hospital- Leeds

I would just like to share my feedback and experience so far with Dr. Wah, CNS Glencross & team at St. James’ University Hospital, and to thank them for all the care and support received so far.

I am a 39 year old male and at the end of last year I was admitted to hospital following a large kidney stone. During my treatment I had Shock Wave Lithotripsy to help break the kidney stone and release it, which was successful. A couple of weeks after been released from the hospital I still felt a mild pain on the left side of my abdomen, after addressing this to the doctor, I was referred for an ultrasound scan where I found out that there were numerous tumours on both kidneys. Further investigations including a CT scan with dye, MRI, and later a biopsy confirmed that my tumors were cancerous (papillary renal cell carcinoma).

Following the biopsy results and given the fact that one of the tumors in particular was big and presented the risk of spreading, I had to face the fact that I might have to go trough a radical kidney nephrectomy (removal of the entire kidney). As a alternative to removal of the entire kidney I had the option to try kidney cryoablation and so I was referred to Dr. Wah, Professor and Senior Consultant Interventional Radiologist at St. James’ University Hospital.

Shortly after been invited for an appointment with Dr. Wah at St James’ University Hospital, who took her time to explain and provided information about how this procedure is performed as well as the benefits and the risks involved. Dr. Wah kindly answered all the questions that I and my wife had regarding the cryoablation procedure in a clear and easy way to understand, which then allowed me to make an informed decision as to whether I should undergo the treatment.

The care and professionalism showed by the team at St. James University Hospital was outstanding, I really felt like I was in good hands. The day of the procedure Dr. Wah and CNS Glencross assessed and talked to me which made me feel more confident that everything was going to be fine. After the cryoablation procedure I spent an overnight stay in hospital and then spent 2 weeks recovering before going back to work, which I didn’t think was too bad considering that a big portion of my kidney has just been ablated. After returning home CNS Hamish Glencross periodically called me to ask how I was feeling and to assess my recovery, which made me feel very cared for.

I would like to thank Dr. Wah and her team in St. James’ University Hospital for the amazing care and support that contributed to a quicker than expected recovery and the confidence it has given me to continue with the treatment for other kidney tumors and for my future personal health. Could not recommend Dr. Wah and team highly enough.
