"Drop-in covid jab"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde / Covid Vaccination Programme

(as a service user),

Waited a little over an hour this morning for it to be my turn. When I got to the person giving the jab, they first called me "sir", which was slightly odd as I look nothing like a man. Looked up my info and noted that I had an appointment for this jab in a couple weeks time, questioned why I was there. Then said they had to go check on something. Came back and explained they had to see if the jab could be given as it had "only been 8 weeks", which yes...8 weeks is what we are being told is the new wait period between AZ vaccinations...hence why I was there.  A remark was made about others missing out or having to wait hours in the sun which seemed to me was suggesting I was jumping the queue or somehow unfairly taking my second shot ahead of time. I thought I was doing the right thing by dropping in and freeing up my appointment slot for someone who can't drop in or stand in a queue for hours. They gave me the jab and sort of waved me towards the exit.

I feel like the messaging people are getting from NHSGGC twitter and the website needs to either be clarified (if I was indeed in the wrong for showing up today), or the people doing the vaccinations should be kept informed of changes to the policy. The nurse was a bit rude with me and I left feeling bad, whether she was right or not.

Dear octansgk95

Thank you for getting in touch.

I am very sorry to read about your experience at our vaccination centre. This is not the standard of care that we aim to provide and please accept my apologies.

You are correct that the drop in centres are for people who have waited more than eight weeks for their second dose of AstraZeneca. People who are 40 years old or over and have not yet had your first dose of vaccine can also attend the drop in centres.

I will share your post with our Communication Team who manage NHSGGC’s twitter account and website and if you could let me know which drop in centre you attended I can share this with my colleagues in Public Health who manage the Vaccination Programme.

Take Care

Nicole
