"Poor a&e care, great ongoing care"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Accidents & Emergency Antrim Area Hospital / Ward C1 Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I was admitted to ED via ambulance for what turned out to be an ovarian torsion and large abscess. I arrived at the department at 12 midnight. I wasn’t seen by a doctor until 7am. In the time in between I asked every hour for pain relief as I was really very sore only to be told I couldn’t have anything until the doctor seen me. I had a temperature and was shivering all night but was given only very basic pain relief. At 5am I considered going home as at least at home I could take some pain relief. Every time I pressed the buzzer to the nurse in tears with pain I was either ignored or told I couldn’t have anything.

Once I was seen at 7am the doctor realised I was in fact septic and in a lot of pain. The doctor then gave me morphine. I have never experienced such poor care at the hands of a nurse before and I dread the thought of ever attending ED again after this experience.

I received dither treatment in ward c1 which was excellent. I was cared for by an outstanding team of people whom I cannot thank enough.
