"Labour and my aftercare"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

Due to me having low platelets I was made aware by a doctor I had seen weeks before my labour that I would not be allowed an epidural, forceps or suction cup. During my labour doctors were close to giving me an epidural and forceps luckily my boyfriend stood in and said to them. This is ridiculous and so dangerous. My aftercare on summersfield ward was awful. The staff had no patience. Had me in tears and other patients too. My baby wouldn’t latch on staff weren’t patient at all. They didn’t keep up with my pain relief. Also had to buzz 3 times until somebody would finally Empty my catheter when it was bursting. 3 different staff came and told me they would and never came back. Staff didn’t help one bit when getting my baby out of the bed next to me when I asked. I was in so much pain and not one person helped me. I was then given medication twice in one day and wasn’t until I pointed it out staff noticed. Me and my baby were put out of our room and put into a waiting room for 4 hours. Was told my medication would be ready at 5 so I had pumped for my baby and fed her half past 4 so she would be okay until got home. After constantly chasing them up and various staff saying they were going to get it, 9 o’clock came and I was finally given my medication. I was in agony from my section my baby struggling to latch on, we were made to sit on a hard chair for 4 hours

Last pain relief was before getting put out of the room. No apology or anything. Many of my friends have had sikmilar problems and something needs to be done. Triage and recovery were amazing. I can’t thank Martha, Nikki & and the student that were so good to me. So a big thank you to the 3 of you for being so amazing. This is the positive part that I will hold onto.

Hello @AMS,

Firstly I would like to congratulate you on the birth of your daughter, I hope you have all settled at home well and are enjoying family life.

Thank you very much for taking the time to send your feedback to us at what is, I am sure, a busy time for your family- we really appreciate this as it helps us to see where we can make improvements.

I would like to apologise for the experience you have shared. This is not the level of care that we hope to provide. I can assure you that we will take your comments on board and address them with the staff and look at where went wrong and how this can be avoided in the future.

We are in the process of looking at how we can improve the Discharge Lounge to make it more comfortable for women waiting to leave. Your feedback has reinforced to us that this should be a priority.

Once again thank your for your time and please be assured that we will work hard to avoid other women having a similar experience. Should you wish to discuss this further, please contact Gram.womensservices@nhs.scot with your details.

Thank you

Natalie
