"Grandmother's hip operation"

About: Musgrave Park Hospital / Children's Orthopaedics and biologics

(as a carer),

I think there is plenty of room for improvement at Musgrave Park Hospital.

The parts of the hospital I saw were not well sign-posted. I needed to go to Ward 2B or something and there is one ward after another and when I went to approach the nurse's station they seemed *extremely annoyed* that how dare I approach them and ask about my grandmother, considering that there was no writing *anywhere* to say it was Ward 2A and that I had to continue further down the corridor.
My grandmother (who has dementia) had recently come out of surgery following a right total hip replacement and was complaining of severe pain (and this is a lady who would never usually and have a high pain tolerance) but they could only offer her Paracetamol...
I do suspect if the nerve or spinal block I think she received didn't quite work given her levels of pain.
One doctor came to review her incision site and was essentially dressed for the gym, had no identification on them anywhere, which I don't think it appropriate in a ward setting nor with patients with dementia and was extremely condescending when they explained why they couldn't give anything strong for the pain.

Dear Bluepointe,

My name is Barry Murtagh and I am the Patient and Client Experience Facilitator within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

I am sorry to hear about this particular experience in Musgrave Park Hospital and it sounds like much learning can be achieved from this.

I have shared this story with the Service Manager in Orthopaedics.

Best wishes,

Barry
