I gave birth to my little boy in April I was induced du e to him being a big baby. Everyone was amazing and made my long and hard labour experience a lot easier. the labour team where very informative and helpful and answered all questions we had even the silly ones we had as first time parents. After a complicated birth where the team where very professionals and managed to stop me from bleeding very quickly without having to go to surgery. The care after was great and the team in ward 16 made learning to look after a new baby as very joyful experience and nothing was a problem. They helped with breastfeed and showed us how to bath him before we left.
The only thing that we felt let the experience down was during his check up before we left they noticed he was tongue tied as new parents we didn’t no what this was and asked if this was a problem they said it was minor and it would be fine. Once discharged we learnt that he had lost 12% of his birth at the midwife visit we then got put onto a feeding plan which included topping him up with formula as he wasn’t getting enough from the breast at this point no one mentioned that the tongue tie would be a problem however after getting the formula he no longer wanted the breast as the formula was the easier option for him so we made the difficult decision to stop breast feeding. At 5 weeks old we got his tongue tie snipped privately after further independent research. The consultant informed us that he had a very bad tongue tie and which would have made breastfeeding almost impossible for him.
I feel we where not given the correct information at the time when it was found and if we had been we would have been able to continue to breastfeed him successfully. However when asking for information on it and if it needed to be snipped I was told it was minor and would be fine. For the small procedure that it was i feel this should have been snipped in the hospital when they found it and if I had any other children and they where tongue tied I would definitely be more persistent to get it snipped but as a new mum I felt I had to take the advice of the midwifes.
