I was recently admitted to the hospital for five days. During my stay I was moved from A and E, to two separate wards. At every step along the way I observed two things. The first was how astoundingly chaotic and busy these places can be, and the second was how the people there acted with professionalism without once showing the strain they must have been under. I work in a health field myself, and so while I could see the cracks I could also see the strength of the people in working through them and still delivering a high level of care. I saw tired people, I saw overworked people, but I didn't see a single person in my entire stay who let any frustration affect their work.
Special mention goes to the support worker with the wrong name tag, who came in full of cheer and laughter, trying to make the patients' stays better. Also to the nurse who worked three straight 12 hour days and did it with utmost care and kindness for everyone, even for me when I was having a bad day and was a little grumpy.
