"Maternity Triage"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit

(as a service user),

Due to having a few complications during my pregnancy leading to reduced movements I turned to Maternity Triage for help and reassurance. I ended up having to attend the unit twice and both times I felt I received no support or proper reassurance. The first time I was put in the room and told to hold the monitors on my stomach for the duration of the time I was there which was almost 2 hours because the staff member couldn’t find my babies heartbeat for long enough and I got the impression they couldn’t be bothered to try, and left it to me to find. When the shifts changed over the second staff member sat with me until they were happy with the pattern that was being picked up. My second visit I was put on the monitor for almost an hour and once taken off it, I was handed the paper and told to go. I had previously made it clear as to how much pain I was in and not being able to focus on my babies movements. No advice given barely even spoken to from the midwives. A concerned high risk pregnancy patient and I simply get told “ you can go now”. It’s understandable that units are busy and with Covid wards can be short, but that’s no excuse for poor conduct of care towards expecting mothers. Midwives/Nurses are busy, but they should at least be taking time to speak to the patients that attend not just put them in a room leave them to it then send them home. Personally would have felt more at ease if things were discussed/explained. Completely different to when I had my first child.

Dear tcgle1039

Thank you for sharing your experience with us and I am sorry to learn that it has not been a good one for you.

Having concerns about your baby’s movements must have been an extremely worrying time for you so it is disappointing to read that our staffs’ care and behaviours did not give you the reassure you needed. Please accept my sincere apologies.

This last year has had a major effect on everyone but is no excuse for poor care. It is our expectation that staff continue giving the highest standards of care to our mums-to-be at all times. Taking the time to listen; discuss concerns and give reassurance is such a vital part of our role.

I will share your comments with the triage team. I know they will be upset to read the impression their care has made on you. We take all feedback seriously so be assured that the Senior Midwife in triage will work on where we can learn from your experience and aim to improve going forward.

I would be more than happy to discuss your care with you in more detail if that would help? I can be contacted via email on gail.bell@nhs.scot or via telephone on 01324567484.

I am unsure if you have had your little baby but hope the remainder of your pregnancy has gone well.

With best wishes

Gail
