I just wanted to highlight something which could have had a detrimental effect on my grandads quality of life, he was due for surgery for hip replacement, which he was lucky to get a last minute cancellation. It was only when my granny who had travelled down with him had phoned as she hadn't heard that he had been transfered to ITU as he had a reaction to a medication that they gave him, when 1.he told them what he was allergic to it and 2. It was in his records.
Although he said he was allergic they gave him something in the same category of analgesia, meaning not only did he not get his surgery he has now ended up in the highest level of care for monitoring due to his BP and HR being in his boots! As a nurse myself I am appalled that they gave something that should never have been given to someone with allergies and it has caused more distress for my granny who had no communication in the beginning from the nurses/doctor who was in charge of his care. I understand the NHS is at its knees, but it was easily avoided!
