"my husband"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Intensive Care Unit Ninewells Hospital / Medical High Dependency

(as a relative),

My husband was taken into Ninewells about 5 weeks ago, he had a really bad cough and had lost  a lot of weight.  Covid was ruled out as he had presented other symptoms, and he was moved to ICU.  This was a terribly difficult time for me as, one, I am waiting for a hip replacement at another hospital ( about 100 miles away) and we have no family so visiting was down to me alone.  I cannot thank the staff enough, the receptionists who got to know my face, the porters for wheeling me down to the ward and the many nurses and doctors who, apart from doing their own tasks, took time out to speak to me and to help me understand what was happening.

My husband was very ill and I believe he had been given CPR  several times.  I am now waiting to find out when he is going to the High Dependancy Unit.  To see your loved one is a state of sedation with ventilation is horrible and to see them so helpless when they come round is equally so.

Many many thanks to all the staff as mentioned above.  Without their support I think I would not have coped nearly so well.

Dear Lorfp47

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience via Patient Care Opinion and for highlighting the valued support that you received during your husband’s admission.

As you have highlighted there are many colleagues throughout the hospital who work collaboratively to enhance every patient and family member’s experience.

I am sorry to hear that his admission was complicated further with your own logistical and health difficulties and wish you well with your upcoming planned surgery.

The staff appreciate that having a relative in critical care is a worrying and stressful time and strive to support relatives throughout this admission.

I will ensure that your thanks and kind words are shared with the staff concerned so that they too can be aware of how they assisted you to cope during such a challenging time.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback and I wish your husband all the best during his recovery.
