"Front desk Security"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

In May my father was admitted to ARI for sepsis. On speaking to the ward 108 nurses they told my mother that she could visit my father the next morning.

My mother, who is registered blind, went to the front desk at ARI and told them she did not have a visitors pass, however, the nurses had gave permission for her to go to the ward. The weather was horrible this day, pouring with rain. The security person was very rude to my mother, not even letting her inside the hospital to keep dry and told her to go to A&E where they would assist her. My mother told him that she was blind and could not see where to go, they merely pointed her in the direction of A&E. My mother then got lost, but luckily a very nice porter found her and assisted her and took her to A&E, where an even nicer nurse called the ward my father was on and showed her where to go. The nurse at A&E had even expressed that this was not the first time this had happened this week and how apologetic she was.

As a nurse myself, I know that other security workers have called the ward I work on if a visitor has forgotten their pass or does not have one yet. The fact he knew my mother is blind shows a lack of compassion. What was already a stressful day was made worse by him.

As much as I am grateful of the kindness from the porter and nurse, I am disappointed and appalled at the security persons behaviour and actions.

Hello Wezengz57,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion.

I'm sorry to read about your mother's recent experience whilst visiting and I'd like to try and resolve this visiting challenge for your mother as quickly as possible and ensure it is not repeated.

Can I ask you to email me directly at paul.paton2@nhs.scot with the time and date that your mother visited in order that we can make further investigation and speak to the staff member involved.

We have both Contracted and temporarily redeployed staff at the doors and it is important that the welcome they give to service users is consistent as well as compassionate.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Paul.
