Following surgery in the Royal Victoria hospital I was discharged to the care of the hospital podiatry team in Causeway Hospital. As my wound was slow to heal the podiatrist requested an x ray, which showed possible osteomyelitis.
Following discussion with other health professionals, I was referred to the Hospital Diversion Team for a 6 week, daily course of IV antibiotics. Although I had to go to Ballymoney from Coleraine every day for this, I believe it was better than being readmitted to hospital, after already having spent the month of January in the Royal and it was a small price to pay considering amputation was the worst case scenario.
All the nurses were fantastic even though it was sometimes difficult getting blood samples from me. I was always kept informed and they answered any questions I had. Although my treatment with them is complete, the saga of 'my left foot' will continue with the podiatry team for a while yet!
The hospital diversion team are providing a great service!
