"My husband died unexpectedly"

About: York Hospital / Accident and emergency York Hospital / Cardiology Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as a relative),

We were on holiday near Thirsk . We had an enjoyable first 4 days then on the Tuesday Andrew suffered a heart attack . (He was fit healthy man normal weight he hadn’t seen a doctor for 13 years)

The ambulance men settled him taking him to York hospital.

Tests revealed a lot of heart problems. Andrew was moved to Coronary Care Unit. Two evenings later the Thursday Andrew had a cardiac arrest and although resuscitated he died several hours later.

Having not been allowed to visit ( Covid rules ) on the Wednesday I was grateful to be allowed to spend those last 3 hours quietly with Andrew as his life drained away.

I was kept informed at every stage.

I would like to thank the kind paramedics ,the A&E staff and the CCU especially Andrew’s doctors and nurse Hannah who cared for him in such a quiet, gentle and respectful way in those last hours .

Update posted by Cromwell (a relative)

Hello. You have asked for further details of my experience with Yorkshire Ambulance service.

The call I made was near midnight on Tuesday 18th May. My husband had gone to bed but within minutes called out in severe pain. He was always reluctant to see a GP ( last time was 13 years before for a cricket injury) or go near a hospital! I could see he was in difficulty and called 999. It was a bit tricky to explain where we were on holiday in a rented holiday cottage in a tiny place, but the operator kept on the line reassuring me until the ambulance arrived. The two paramedics were so calm and kind chatting to Andrew as they treated him. Andrew was soon more relaxed and unaware of how ill he was and went willingly to hospital.

Thank you Yorkshire Ambulance.
