"Oral cancer"

(as the patient),

Had a loose tooth, had it removed last March, just before lockdown, didn’t heal very well started getting sore mouth, as on lockdown phone my GP who prescribed a gel to use as I had some yellow spots o gum and inside jaw, did not help so was given antibiotic, also did not help. By chance I walked past dentists saw a mobile no, so managed an emergency app, given antibiotics. went back a week later to be told she didn’t like look off it, Was referred to Victoria kirkcaldy, saw a doctor who then got mr Bennet who thought it was suspicious had X-rays and biopsy went back the next week to have it confirmed oral cancer. I was referred to Ninewells and saw mr McDonald who explained things to me. Had ct scan he had said how he would do op but then had mri which showed it was in jaw bone, so op was changed, I had 10 hr op but on 29 September we came thru it well had bone removed from right leg to reconstruct my mouth then bit out tummy for ankle, only in icu 1 day and was out hospital in 10 days due to COVID, the nursing staff, doctors were excellent, I can’t remember names. Clair was great, Mr Shafer, and mr McDonald, since I’ve had radiotherapy 20 days finished that in February and again Dr Niblock, Gemma and all in radiotherapy dept excellent, in taking care of me, stopped speech therapist still seeing dietician, and Julie my cancer nurse in Queen Margaret Dunfermline, just had my first 6 wk check up, Mr McAllister is my new consultant he was pleased so fingers crossed I continue to do well, thanks to everyone who has taken care of me. The last 7 months thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for sharing your experience of how you were diagnosed with cancer and your subsequent care of surgery, radiotherapy and now follow up.
