"My operation and overnight stay"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Urology

(as the patient),

I arrived at Royal Cornwall hospital for a Urolift operation in May.

I was in a Waiting room for quite some time and was first seen by a nurse (Tamsyn) to go through the preamble for operation safety which included a further covid test. I liked her - she was very thorough and straightforward in her dealing with me.       I was then saw by Mr Hotston, Consultant Urologist, regarding the fact that the equipment required for my Urolift op had not arrived in spite of great efforts in attempting to get it. He then referred to a previous letter from him where he discussed that my prostate had a problem where the enlarged middle lobe entered the bladder and that it may have been difficult to predict the success in pinning it.

In view of this and the Urolift equipment not being available, he offered me the more invasive (TURP) operation which requires laser surgery. I was happy to be offered this.

I was the last patient of the day in the Theatre and was amazed at everyone that I had any contact with was so kind and friendly especially one of the nurses who had to position me for spinal injections (for numbing of lower half of body). All I can say is that she had a Scottish accent

After Theatre I was put in recovery with Ram looking after me for an hour or more. Again I was so impressed with his helpfulness and happy manner.

Back on the Eden ward by 7pm and again looked after very well. This included a hot meal even tough we were well past the last meal time.

I cannot fault anyone I had contact with but took the name of Nurse Chris who dealt with me on the morning of leaving and all the procedure that required.

So EXCELLENT all round with Mr Hotston taking the prize for deciding to go ahead with my op anyway. He even said to me afterwards that it was the best solution and all went well.

THANK YOU

Dear errandns38,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, please firstly accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here. I was pleased to read that although the Urolift equipment was unfortunately unavailable for your procedure, you were still able to have an operation under Mr Hotston's care and I hope you are continuing to recover well at home.

It is lovely to read about how everyone you came into contact with were kind and friendly and although I am responding to you as a member of the Patient and Family Experience team here at the Trust, I will make sure that everyone mentioned in your story gets a special 'Thank You' through our 'Learning from Excellence' scheme.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us.

Best wishes,

Jess
