"Hospital admission requested by GP."

About: General Practices in NHS Highland Raigmore Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I was suddenly taken unwell on Wed afternoon in 05/21. Phoned GP who asked if  I could get myself down to the surgery. GP wanted me to attend hospital, I explained I have caring responsibilities, to my elderly Mum 90 years with advanced vascular dementia.

GP spoke to someone at the hospital for second opinion. Was allowed to stay at home, with instructions to drink plenty, and GP was to take blood samples and drop them off at the hospital. GP took bloods and dropped them off on his way home.

8am received a phone call from GP, asking if I could make it down to surgery for 12. 15pm. I attended surgery again, was told by GP that bloods results showed  kidney function dropping, and markers significantly raised. GP wanted me to go into hospital. He didn't ask for an ambulance to take me in, he first of all said he didn't want me driving myself in, then asked if I could drive myself to an admission ward, and to pack an overnight bag, just in case.

I drove myself 12  1/2 miles, feeling horrendous. Managed to find the admissions ward, but was unable to get close to the entrance, as drop off only. I have a disability, wear a full length caliper, and walk with 2 crutches. I find walking very difficult at the best of times. I couldn't manage myself, crutches and my overnight bag, and a fair distance for me to have to walk.

Got into the admission ward, I was asked about not having an overnight bag, when I explained, the nurse said we'll see about getting a porter to get it from the car for you, that never happened. I spent an overnight stay in hospital, with no over night bag, I had to ask for a gown up in the ward, and slept on top of the bed with my trousers on. I asked for an extra pillow, but was told there was not a spare one in the department, yet across from me was an empty bed with a pillow on it, but it was never offered to me.

Next morning I was offered 1 weetabix biscuit floating in a bowl full of milk, and a small container of orange juice. A bit of toast wouldn't have gone a miss, as weetabix is a breKfast cereal I struggle to eat. So orange juice for breakfast.

I have never been so glad to get out of there. I then had to find where I'd left the car, walk a big distance to get to it, and then have to drive my self home. I was feeling so awful after, being so poorly. I wasn't even offered a tooth brush and some toothpaste. I will be far more resistant in seeking my GPs help and I will be more firm about not going into hospital in the future, unless it's all been planned first.
