"The perfect care give to me by Ward 24"

About: York Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as a service user),

Was being treated for pneumonia at York Hospital this week and, compared with some problems faced at previous visits, there is no way that I can fault the nurses the doctors  or back-up staff attending patients in Ward 24 and on the contrary I offer my praise for their care, their tolerance and fast response to patients needs. Two incidents will forever stay in my mind and the first of these occurred at night time when a demented patient soiled his bed on four occasions. Each time two nurses stripped  his bed and thoroughly cleaned the patient and at no time, even though they had to perform another three times in the same way and were under constant vile oral abuse from the patient, were there any complaints from the nurse but only kind words to the patient.

The other incident involved me personally. I'm 92 and particularly frail and weak currently but still I am able to be fairly independent when it comes to toiletry needs and I make full use of the ward's Toilet. On this occasion I was having a strip wash when I needed to use the lavatory however I suddenly became faint and completely exhausted and was unable to move from the toilet seat. One senior nurse "Gemma" had been keeping a watchful eye on how long I was in the toilet and suddenly appeared by my side offering kind words of reassurance while cleaning me up and dressing me even to the point of manouvering a very large catheter receptacle through small gaps in my incontinence underwear. I will never forget Gemma who amused me by saying that what she was doing for me was easy compared with her previous 17 year army career. If all NHS hospitals have nursing staff like this then the medical needs of this Country will have a perfect outcome.

Sincerely yours

Thank you for taking the time to leave your valued feedback. Firstly, I am so sorry to hear about your recent illness and hope you've made a safe and speedy recovery. Your story is incredible and I would like to thank you for sharing this with us. It is absolutely fantastic to hear how well you were treated during your stay on ward 24 and to know the care you received from staff made all the difference in your recovery. Our staff work hard to ensure the highest standard of care for our patients and this is only evident in your kind words. I will personally make sure Ward 24 and the nurses you have mentioned see your feedback. I hope, should you ever need our services again, that we can provide the same first class service that you received on this occasion. My best wishes for the future and I thank you again.
