"Poor care, lack of empathy, communication and patient focus."

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a service user),

I am a radiographer in the NHS. I have been off work sick with dizziness, Nausea, light headed ness, always very tired, bad tinnitus since 30 December 2020.

Originally I spoke to the GP (High Street Practice, Lurgan) over 6 weeks and several phone calls he made several diagnoses. I did not improve. I saw another. GP and was referred to ENT at Craigavon Area Hospital. I was obviously unwell, and they said I had confusing symptoms. They referred me for MRI. One month later I rang to find out the results- I was still unwell. And was told that the MRI was normal and I was being discharged! When I said I was still unwell I was told to visit my GP again! I am absolutely disgusted. What happened to taking a holistic approach? What happened to talking with the patient and using a different pathway? What happened to empathy?

5 months later, I am still off work and no further forward. I am at my wits end- does no one care?

I addition I am also under rheumatology at Craigavon. In December 2020 I rang the nurse and asked if I could have a steroid injection as I was in pain.  I had no response. In February I rang again. I was told that they are waiting for the consultants to talk to each other (radiology and rheumatology) and the they will definitely call me back. It is now May - there has not been ANY communication!

Covid is not an excuse. I work in the NHS- I know what pressures they are/are not under.

I am absolutely appalled and discussed. I feel undervalued and as if my health doesn’t matter. I feel as no one on the NHS can be bothered.

Dear Ameliajane40 - Further to my response above, we had asked the relevant staff to look into this matter. I understand that you have now been seen by the rheumatologist, who explained and apologised for the delay in contact with the rheumatology nurse. I hope that you were able to have some of your queries addressed and that you are feeling a bit better.

I hope things will soon improve for you

Best wishes

Update posted by Ameliajane40 (a service user)

Thankyou for investigating my complaint. It is reassuring that Rheumatology made an appointment for me, Dr Ligget personally apologised and explained that I had been ‘lost’ in the system. This is not the first time I have been ‘forgotten’ about as I a referral to cardiology was also misplaced two years ago. I would like reassurances that systems have been put in place to ensure this does not happen again.

I note that there has not yet been a response from ENT. I have since had to see an ENT consultant privately who has provided an explanation and forwarded me onto a Neurologist for further review. I am still very unhappy with the way ENT dismissed me from their records without a conversation or recommendations for the GP. It seems as they are operating in a silo not as part of a multidisciplinary team focussed on the patients best interests.
