"Sustained Job Outcome"

About: Thurrock IPS Employment Service

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I was referred to the IPS Service, I was not working and was taking multiple medication to support my lack of sleep and depressive state. I am the breadwinner of my family and my wife is a stay at home mum with 3 children to look after and I feel committed to getting back into work. Within 2 months of working with IPS I was able to obtain my first paid job. IPS supported me through various methods such as updating my CV, discussing and matching my most alert hours with working hours and discussing and explaining how to professionally inform employers of my mental health condition.

With continued support from the service unfortunately work became less and less, however this did not stop me. I was able to independently obtain another job within a similar field. I feel I have been very stern on proving my new skills and what showing what I have learnt from the discussions with my worker. I have found being in work so helpful with my mental health to the point that I no longer requires a few of the medication that I have been reliant on.

I would like my support worker to be in the background to support me but all in all, I am very happy.

Dear Chrdk98

Thank you for taking the time to post your opinion about Thurrock IPS Employment Service. It was nice to read that the Employment Specialist was able to support you to find paid work in such a short period of time, as well as being able to support you in so many varied ways, which you found very helpful.

You state how work has benefitted your general health and well-being, Research has consistently shown that being in work is important for everyone’s general health and well-being: it gives us a purpose (and an income), promotes independence, allows us to develop social contacts, and is a factor in preventing both physical and mental health problems. For those with mental health problems, being employed can be an important step to recovery, improving self-esteem and confidence and reducing psychological distress.

It was also very pleasing to hear that you were empowered to look for and find another job yourself and that you now feel confident you no longer require the full support of the employment specialist.

On behalf of Thurrock IPS Employment Service, I wish you every success in your new job and future endeavors.
