"Total hip replacement surgery"

About: Royal Bournemouth Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Following my protracted wait due to the Covid virus, I was eventually admitted to the Derwent unit at the Royal Bournemouth for a total hip replacement in March 2021. Prior to my admission I was somewhat apprehensive, I should not have been as the  care and attention I received from every single member of staff and from  my consultant Mr Lawrence O'Hara, my Anaesthetist and all the theatre staff was absolutely  without any concerns whatsoever, so much so that I could almost say it was a most enjoyable experience, especially as the crippling pain in my right hip has now gone and the wound healing is to be admired. I am now short listed for my very painful left hip replacement in June and I pray that my operation and recovery are as speedy and uneventful as I enjoyed in March following which; I am looking forwards to resuming a fairly normal and pain free future. I extend my deepest sympathies to all of you reading this; if you are suffering the pain I have endured for 2 years. I survived with God by my side and the commitment of all the medical staff at The Royal Bournemouth. So a huge helping of gratitude is extended to you all at RBCH. See you again soon.

Dear Hippadrome

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and we are pleased to hear it has been such a positive one.

Clearly the Covid pandemic has had a significant impact on the hospital and a serious knock on effect with waiting times for our patients which we are actively working on to reduce. Thank you for bearing with us during this time and sorry this resulted in an increased period of pain for you to endure.

It is great to hear that after recovering from this surgery this pain has now gone and hope that your upcoming surgery on the other hip has the same dramatic improvement to give you a renewed quality of life in the near future.

Thank you for highlighting the level of care and attention you received from the team looking after you and the teamwork from surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre staff to perform the surgery and then the ward staff and therapy teams aiding in your care and rehabilitation during recovery.

We will forward your kind comments to the Matron to share with the rest of her team as I know they will greatly appreciate your praise.

We wish you all the best for your upcoming surgery and do please let us know how it went once you feel up to it.

Regards

Patient Experience Team
