A colonoscopy is not a pleasant experience, especially after the prep involved, but I don’t exaggerate in saying that the staff actually made it a pleasant experience which is a reflection of how brilliant they were.
From the outset of my appointment, I was greeted and taken care of by reception staff and nursing staff. I met a number of people at my appointment, and every single one, including the Consultant Karen, the nurses Susie, Lynsey, Jill, Rachel and student nurse Jen, were all fantastic at explaining everything and ensuring I was okay every step of the way.
They were also friendly and personable, which put me much more at ease. It can be difficult for patients to retain information particularly about procedures they haven’t had before, and in strange environments, and the nurses manage this by using clear language and lots of repetition to ensure I understood and remembered what they said. This was extremely valuable to me. During the procedure they kept checking to make sure I was okay, and at every stage explained what was happening and what would happen next. I also really appreciate that I had a debrief after the procedure and I got a report to take away and read.
I really struggle to find things that could be improved upon. I suppose it would be even better if patients with special diets were advised in their appointment documentation to bring their own snack, but I expect this to be more down to the hospital catering rather than this department, and this was hardly a problem for me as I’m used to taking my own food. For me, the most important bits were my care by such excellent staff. I’m so very grateful and wish to thank them all so very much for treating me so well.
