"My mum"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / General and specialist medicine

(as a relative),

I took my mum to Alnagelvin Hospital A& E 9th May

I feel what went well was finally getting to see Dr who took bloods which she had never got done last time she was up in March. He also gave her antibiotic through drip and strong pain relief. These have actually helped her alot since 9th May.

Sadly we had to wait 10 and half hours all in all for treatment. We had came up at 8am and didnt see Dr till after 2pm, then by time done bloods and treatment then wait for bloods was after 6pm. The Triage nurse Hannah was lovely I may add but she had mum on low category. I feel that was bit of a let down considering mums eye was very painful and pain was spreading across face. I had to ask for soluble pain killers as mum cant swallow tablets.

To me the chairs in A&E could be more comfy as have to sit long hours on them. Also seems to me if drunks come in they are seen quicker than any of the other patients, which doesnt seem fair especially if ones have been sat long time.

Hello Annimay46

My name is Colleen and I am currently the Emergency department manager. Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback after your attendance with your mum on the 9th of May.

I am sorry for your prolonged wait in ED for treatment, we do try and see all our patients in a timely manner but on occasion due the the high volume of attendances to ED this can cause significant waiting times. Our staff will try and provide quality, safe and effective care to all patients.

Thank you for the lovely feedback about our triage nurse Hannah. I will feed this back to her. All our triage nurses follow guidance and have had training on how to triage patients in relation to their presenting issue. I am sorry you felt that your mum may have been triaged in a low category, this is not our intention. Patients are placed in categories against priority need which is reflected during the triage assessment. After the patient is seen in time order in relation to the priority identified with the triage nurse. In some cases it may appear others are seen quicker but this will all depend on triage assessment. I understand your frustration at this process but triage must provide safe starting point for all patients attending the emergency department.

I am sorry that the seating in the waiting area was uncomfortable and we have discussed this as a team. We will provide, where possible, alternative seating to patients in the waiting area.

I hope that you mum has made a full recovery and any if you need to attend in the future you will have a better experience.

I hope this response has provided you reassurance that our team work as hard as they can, to provide safe and effective care to all our patients.

Thank you again for giving us your feedback.
