"Non compliance with Covid rules"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Outpatients

(as the patient),

I attended the QEUH Glasgow outpatients department in May 2021 for an ENT appointment. Doctors, nurses and other staff were exceptionally kind, helpful and efficient and I was very well looked after.

However, there was only one lift in operation out of three. Large signs re social distancing were around the lifts but when the only one came people -about 8 or 10 piled into it. I waited for the next one as this is not safe. While I waited three or four other people came and without hesitation got into the lift beside me. I stood in the corner nearest the door and was only going one floor. I would have walked but I have a leg injury. I was hugely stressed by this behaviour. Also walking along the corridors, I stayed at the edges, following the yellow social distancing circles but other people, staff and patients walked in the middle and some brushed past me. I saw members of staff with face masks down at their chin and one of them bumped into me. On leaving, hardly anyone used the hand sanitiser at the door including a number of members of staff. This will spread the virus. I was shaking with fear as I have been exceptionally careful over the last year or so, am an older lady with previous serious health issues and have only had my first jab so far. This should not be happending.

Dear Long Term Patient

Thank you for getting in touch and it is good to hear that the Doctors, Nurse and other staff were exceptionally kind, helpful and efficient and that you were well looked after.

I am sorry to hear that there was only one lift in operation when you attended your appointment and have shared this with my colleagues in Facilities.

It is disappointing to learn that people were not adhering to social distancing rules and that staff were wearing their masks incorrectly which left you feeling fearful and unsafe. I will share your feedback with the Senior Management Team responsible for the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for actioning.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Dear Long Term Patient,

Many thanks for your feedback.

We are pleased that whilst in the care of our clinical teams at the QEUH, you were happy with the care you received.

It’s disappointing that we have failed to meet both our own and your expectations within our lift and corridor areas. We were upgrading elements of the mechanics of the lifts and this was having an impact on the available lifts for patients, visitors and NHS colleagues. This has now been resolved.

In addition, we have invested a great deal of time in ensuring the right training regarding Social Distancing, use of hand sanitiser and wearing of PPE is delivered and indeed practiced at all times with all of our colleagues.

I have asked that further communication to remind all colleagues is shared again and refresher training be arranged.

Kind Regards

Aly Thomson

Update posted by Long term patient (the patient)

Thank you. It might be an idea to have someone, similar to the marshals outside, standing by the left and not allowing more than four in at a time. Similarly, to have someone at the sanitation stations at the exits. This would be to ensure compliance by patients.

Sometimes people just have to be told what to do not just advised.
