At approximately 9pm on 25 January my 84 year old Mother was brought in by ambulance. After an initial assessment she was moved to a side room. Some 5 hours later after I had asked when she would be seen by a doctor one appeared; the very same one who in a loud voice asked an old man "if we can't get your blood pressure up and your heart stops do you want resussitated" this occured just after we arrived. The doctor spent less than five minutes talking to my Mother and I prescribed antibiotics for a urinaty tract infection and said she could leave. If necessary she would arrange transportation (but this could take several hours) to return my mother home. We had our own car. At 3am my Mother who was in a very confused state and unable to walk unaided was bundled into a wheelchair and taken to the ambulance bay to wait for the car coming round. She had to be virtually lifted into the car. On 27 January my Mother had not improved and an ambulance was dispatched to take her to the RVI. She was admitted and remains there whilst they diagnose what is wrong with her; they did find that she has an irregular heartbeat. I have a meeting with the Consultant tonight to discuss her ailments. The question is when a patient arrives with the same symptoms how can one hospital discharge her and another admit her?
