"access to physio gym and hydro pools glasgow"

About: Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre / Discharge Lounge Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Rehabilitation University Hospital Monklands / General Medicine (Wards 2,10,12 and 17)

(as a carer),

hi, I am at the moment trying to help my mum get the right physio and hydrotherapy she requires.

She was diagnosed with Myeloma last year and spent months in and out of hospitals in glasgow. It has left her with major mobility problems and using a wheelchair and walking frame. ( she is only 67) The care she received from monklands, the beatsons and queen elizabeth with regards to her cancer was really excellent but since then the aftercare with physio etc has been very hard to access.

my mum leg weakness and hip movement is getting worse by the week and i feel I am really having to continually push to get her the help she needs.

I live in Australia so this makes it very difficult.

Can you tell me what hospitals in and around Glasgow would be able to see her for hydrotherapy with a physio.

i would really appreciate any help you could give.

Hi Steph78

Sorry to hear that your mum is struggling and that the aftercare from Physiotherapy has been difficult to access.

The normal process would be for the ward staff to do an onward referral if Physiotherapy was required. This would then be picked up by the appropriate service according to the individual need.

To give us more detail so we can help your mum could you please call University Hospital Monklands on 01236 748748 and ask for extension 404824 where you will be able to discuss the situation with one of our senior Physiotherapists. Once we hear from you we will be able to start the process of getting the appropriate team to assess your mum.

Many thanks for highlighting

Claire Rae

Dear steph78

Thank you for your enquiry regarding access to the hydrotherapy service in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Unfortunately we had to suspend the service in both the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary in response to the Covid Pandemic. As it is a healthcare environment we have to follow government guidelines regarding patient and staff safety. This includes ensuring patients and staff socially distance within a hydrotherapy pool and follow personal protective equipment guidelines. Due to the humid and wet environment of hydrotherapy this has proven to be a challenging task, especially sourcing a waterproof surgical mask. We are working to address these issues with our infection control and health safety teams. While this is ongoing we are unable to give a date of when hydrotherapy will open but please be assured that once it is safe to do so hydrotherapy will reopen to provide rehabilitation.

We are sorry to hear you have had such a difficult time accessing Physiotherapy for your mother and I am glad to see that our physiotherapy colleagues in NHS Lanarkshire have already responded.

Kind Regards

Lorraine Friel

Hydrotherapy Team Lead
