"Awaiting gallbladder removal"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Ayr / Accident & Emergency University Hospital Ayr / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I have severe biliary colic and gallbladder problems awaiting cholecystectomy. Ongoing symptoms include chronic daily abdominal and gallbladder pain which radiates round into back and right shoulder.  Chronic diarrhea after eating most foods everyday which causes extreme fatigue and an overall feeling of being "hungover" everyday.  GP has told me not to take any more NSAID's as they are concerned I may have developed a stomach ulcer.  So I have no pain relief apart from paracetamol.  I follow a strict diet (see below) and I am very careful with fat intake.

Side note:  I am breastfeeding a baby who has allergies and CANNOT have formula.  The baby reacts to all formulas including hypoallergenic formulas.  She has breastmilk only, and I follow a restricted diet avoiding Cows Milk, Soya, Egg, Gluten and Beef as these are what she reacts to.

First gallbladder attacks happened in February 2021, after 3 days of suffering extreme pain I was advised by my GP to present myself at A&E.  Upon arriving at A&E the reception staff attitude was dire, however once I was through triage etc I must say ALL staff were brilliant.  I was jaundiced, my liver function was off and I needed to stay in for two nights.  I was told I would need a gallbladder removal.  Since that first stay I have had to attend A&E a further four times with such severe pain that I cannot handle,  and the only thing that gives me relief is IV morphine.

Yesterday I had to call 111 at 3am as the pain was so severe, I have young children at home and 111 decided it was in the best interest to send an ambulance.  They were very helpful.  The ambulance guys were amazing, my veins are terrible and they done everything possible to get the IV morphine into me which resulted in them going in via a vein in my foot.  Upon arriving at the hospital I was asked why I thought it necessary to come via ambulance, to which I explained 111 had sent it.

Most of the staff yesterday were great, as always.  However the consultant I seen had a dire attitude and basically just told me I'll need to wait and I'll need to suffer the symptoms until I get the gallbladder removed.  Seemed to be far more interested in how much the operation was costing me - ( I don't see what that had to do with them?) as I have booked a private removal in June.  Also scoffed at me and said "you must have a good job to pay for that" and I then said I had to take it out on finance and they laughed.  All this whilst I'm still in pain!  I asked if removal was available any sooner and was told "absolutely not" and to keep presenting myself at A&E when I have pain.

I missed breakfast as I was to be nil by mouth.  I was told to give a urine sample if I could, and a urine bowl was placed in the toilet which I provided and nobody took and checked it.  It was still laying there when I left.  I was told I would need to eat something before I could leave to check if I could keep it down without vomiting.  I said I would eat some gluten free toast (I've had this on previous visits) and was told that wasnt an option.  I was provided with a baked potato and beans which, quite frankly was disgusting.  I said I wasn't eating something so heavy on an empty stomach and I was told I MUST eat before I could leave.  I did NOT eat it because I knew it would set off further pain.  I then left and was told to come back if I experienced further pain.

On another side note, everytime I'm admitted there is a complete and utter nightmare over what I can be fed!  There is such little knowledge of food intolerances and allergies.  I'm told to eat a low fat diet but yet each time I'm in there I'm offered foods such as fish and chips and steak dinners.  There is a terrible lack of knowledge around cows milk allergy where all staff assume it's lactose intolerance which is NOT the case, my baby and I both have cows milk protein allergy not lactose intolerance.  One time I was given a glass of cows milk with my food, right next to the lunch menu which the previous member of staff had written "COWS MILK ALLERGY" in bold writing!

I would like to re-iterate that I'm not complaining about the majority of staff as the nurses who look after me have been absolutely amazing.  It's the overall fact that I'm left in pain and nothing is done about it.  I work full time from home with two young children and I'm now having to pay for an operation which is available on the NHS.
