"Rationing of DEXA scans?"

About: Somerset PCT

(as the patient),

I have recently been suffering problems with falls and my GP referred me for a DEXA (bone) scan. I last had a DEXA scan in October 2010 and was then told that I would need them every two years.

However, after speaking to Choose and Book I was told that they are only allowed to give patients DEXA scans every five years.

I had to get back to my GP who said she had to haggle to persuade them to give me a scan this year. I've now been given a date for a scan but it is not until November 2013 which is ten months away!

I am worried about my bones and this seems like a very long time to wait. I also don't see why these scans are being rationed like this. Surely if the GP refers me for a scan, then I should be able to have one?
