Recently in the evening I was visiting my dad on ward 30 who is very poorly. This ward is for end of life care. I heard shouting outside my dads bay so I went to look at what is going on. I saw a degrading and humiliating scene that I would describe as play ground bullying being led by a ward nurse. They were shouting at a person who I assume was visiting his mum (over heard him say so can I not see my mum for 10min). This mans English was broken so I could see that he was struggling to articulate himself and he just wanted to see his mum.
The ward nurse was shouting at him and raising their voice to the extent that all the staff, including HCA, students and nurses were all gathered around watching the scene. It was deeply saddening and upsetting the manner in which they were talking and I did not expect this from a professional. The level of incompetence in their manner, and disrespect kept me up all night. It made me wonder how they talk to my dad when I am not around.
My dad is being discharged soon and it is a relief. I was really lost for words. I noted that the patients in my dads bay were becoming anxious about what is happening due to the shouting and some of them were wandering out to the scene to look. This is not what we expect from the NHS, this is not what we expect from our nurses who are the face of the NHS and this is not how our tax money should be spent.
