"The care my son received from Ward 2C at the Royal Hospital for Sick children"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Gastroenterology

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was taken into hospital at 11 weeks old and spent a month over Christmas in the hospital where we then got him home for 2 weeks before being readmitted where we spent a further 3 months in 2c before being moved in the final few weeks to ward 3b. As a first time mum I was petrified over my sons health and really struggled mentally as to why and what could be causing the symptoms arlo was showing. I was worried to even leave him for small tasks like going for a shower or getting a cup of tea but very quickly the nursing staff showed me care compassion and kindness when I needed it most. Over the time I spent within ward 2c I can honestly say the staff became what felt like family. Without the support they showed us all every single day I don’t know how we would of got through the months spent within those 4 walls. I would like to thank every single one of them for constantly supporting us and providing care that goes above and beyond anything that could be taught. As well as the care they received I never had any doubts over there competency over carrying out tasks. I would like to say a very big and special thank you to the play specialist team also, Lynne in 2C spent time out of her busy days making sure I had time to get a shower and eat. She is an incredible lady who deserves so much praise for the work she does and the support she gives to her patients and family. Jim the house keeper is also an absolute credit to the NHS and ward 2C, he became a real friend of all of ours due to his kindness and willingness to try and make our stay better, he constantly made our son smile and nothing was ever too much for him. Furthermore, I would like to especially thank the nursing staff who’s names I can remember ( I am sorry if I have forgotten names I know I have) Layla, Melissa, Pippa, Rachel, Lindsey, Jessica and last but by no means least Kirsty. Again, sorry for any names I have missed. Thank you will never be enough and as I previously have said I don’t know how we would of got through our time without the compassion you all shown us every single day. As a student nurse myself I know how busy and exhausting 12.5 hour shifts can be yet never did you lack care or competency in your role and as a team you are unbelievable. Thank you for never giving up on finding answers and for always checking how we were doing as well as our son.

I would just like to finish this by saying not only are this ward an absolute pleasure and credit to the national health service but every person I met along my son's journey from the charity the domestic staff the family services and everyone else - you provide a service that I hope one day I can provide to a family.

Dear Ca2019,

Thank you so much for your lovely response regarding your stay within RHC, whilst your son was unwell.

You were in hospital for long periods during your son's illness and with a very young baby and being a mum for the first time, I can only imagine how difficult this time must have been for you and your family.

It was comforting to know that the support and help you got from the staff, made such a difference to your stay in hospital and how they were able to support you and make you feel like part of a family during this difficult time. The acts of kindness and compassion you mentioned from the staff were uplifting to hear, and how they made your stay a little less isolated is something, I am sure they will be delighted to have achieved.

Your feedback will be shared with all the Teams and individual staff within RHC that you have mentioned, to which I am sure they will be delighted to hear, and for which they will be greatly appreciative. Thank you for taking the time to post this amazing feedback about your experience.

I would like to wish you, on behalf of the team, well in your career path and I hope your son Arlo continues to do well.

With Kindest Regards and Thanks

Mandy
