"Level of care on Harrowden ward Kettering"

About: Kettering General Hospital / General medicine

(as a service user),

My father in law was admitted for a blood transfusion. He was bright for his age , but hard of hearing , as you would expect from a person in their nineties. Upon investigation it was found he had cancer . Obviously this was very sad & as a family wanted to get him home . We hadn’t been able to visit him due to Covid. We asked the staff to explain to dad why we couldn’t visit & make sure they fitted his hearing aids & spoke loudly to him etc. As far as we are aware none of which was carried out .

He became dehydrated because they left his drinks out of reach .

He then became confused.

He then didn’t eat , no effort or time was spent with him to coax him to eat .

He fell out of bed , because it was pitch dark middle of the night & didn’t call a doctor until the next day . He was black from bruising .

His oral hygiene was non existent & had a gross congealed ball of mucus stuck in his mouth.

Basically they didn’t care for him , it was shocking.

I think the staff on this ward should be shamed & retrain . What a shocking way to treat a human being in their last weeks of life .
