"My daughter being failed"

About: Camhs Coatbridge

(as a service user),

My daughter had a late diagnosis of ASD, therefore has missed out on intervention.

She suffers from mental health due to this. We have had to visit a&e a few times due to suicidal ideation. I took my daughter down to a & e on Friday afternoon and was seen by an understanding doctor who took the time to talk to her. She was then seen by the psychiatric team and said they would contact camhs for her to be seen by the crisis team. However, I phoned camhs myself to be told that my daughter doesn’t meet the criteria to be seen and will have to wait until she gets to the top of the waiting list. I felt I was being spoken down to and was repeatedly told that my daughter doesn’t meet the criteria.

I’m disgusted at the way I was spoken to on the phone and for the response the psychiatric team reported back to camhs. My daughter is not attending school, has poor eating habits, (making herself sick), screaming with fear due to the things she sees and the different voices she hears in her head. She thinks she has throat cancer, the list is endless... during our most recent time at a & e she told the dr that one of the therapists told my daughter  that if you don’t open up you are wasting my time and there’s people a lot worse than her. I want to know what service supports a child’s mental health, if camhs don’t!

Dear Asd73,

First of all I am sorry that your experience has been so upsetting for you and your daughter.

Making a Diagnosis of ASD is not done quickly and is often made over time after considerable assessment, as young people do change and develop at different rates. The post diagnosis needs of children with an ASD diagnosis are often complex and require multiple social and psychological supports mainly from within the family, education services and community supports.

As you have raised a number of issues here it may be worth logging your concerns with our Patient Affairs department. This would allow us to look into your daughters care and respond personally and appropriately.

With regards to any urgent concerns, you have indicated that your daughter is on the waiting list, the CAMHS team where your daughter has been referred to can be contacted and you should have the details of that in your letter regarding her waiting for an appointment. The teams are under high demand but will assess your concerns from a clinical perspective and advise you accordingly as to whether your daughter needs seen sooner or whether other resources are available until her appointment.

Regards

Jim Murray
