"Long covid in kids"

About: Northwick Park Hospital / General surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

My son caught covid in Dec 2020 from school. He started with flu like symptoms but from about day 12  started complaining of difficulty passing urine, kidney spasms, pain in lower back and also pain in stomach(left abdomen). He was seen and given antibiotics. Pain in lower back got better in couple of days but stomach pain kept coming back every now and then. Stomach started looking bloated and distended. He even complained of chest pains. We made couple of emergency visits but every time after couple of hours wait at a&e we were sent back telling there's no issue. Later investigations on blood and US have shown up all normal. But the problem of stomach pain and chest pain persisted for so long ( at least 3 months) and there's was no explanation as to why that kept happening.  The doctors were good and supportive in doing the tests and required investigations. However, I also felt that  they were a bit insensitive at a point, where they actually suspected me and the child of making up these stories because nothing had been showing up on the reports, but definitely I've seen my son suffer these 3 months and the lack of trust that our GP started showing made us feel really helpless.

I think more investigations need to carried for long covid issues. There's not much known and therefore doctors aren't really in  a position to help but definitely there is an issue that needs to be looked into.
