"Food"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical/Gastroenterology (Ward 11)

(as a service user),

I’m coeliac but also vegetarian. I was in hospital for 3 days in 2020, and was served a free from meal for lunch and dinner as there were no suitable options on the normal menu. Each time, the only gluten free vegetarian option was butter bean stew/casserole/hot pot. Taste was non-existent and it wasn’t nutritious or varied as I was served it for all meals except breakfast.

Fast forward to being admitted to hospital yesterday. Butter bean stew for dinner and lunch today. The nightmare continues. And this is in a gastro ward.

Please, please whoever is in charge of this - provide some variety (maybe use lentils instead of butter beans?!) and give people more than one choice. Also if the meals tasted good, that would be a bonus! PLEASE fix this! It shouldn’t be hard.

Thank you

Dear mercurycj56

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback in relation to coeliac vegetarian choices within UHH. I am very sorry to hear that you were repeatedly offered the same meal and that you found it to lack taste.

I will discuss your observations with the catering manager and hope that we can use your observations to make improvements going forward.

Thank you again for sharing.

Best Wishes

Lise

Thank you Lisa.

The catering manager came to speak to me the following morning after my email to Patient Affairs.

He was very apologetic and looking to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

Since then, things have improved - I was given the menu sheets so was able to choose some options. And the lovely catering lady in Ward 11 made sure I got given a decent breakfast and gf toast in the evening.

I’m having jacket potato for every lunch and dinner as it’s really the only thing that is edible, so if you can make any improvements to the quality of the food (taste, some fresh green veg) to provide healthy options which also taste half decent, I’m sure others would really benefit.

Thanks
