"A truly wonderful example of a person centred service."

About: Dumfries & Galloway Community Services / STARS (Short Term Assessment Reablement Service) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a carer),

My husband had a fall at home early hours of Easter Monday 2021. Care call service called ambulance and they arrived quickly. Crew were brilliant and assessed husband did not need to go to hospital but referred him to STARS.

Phone call at 11am Easter Monday from Senior OT to do telephone assessment. As husband takes powerful medication he was very sleepy when OT called. She offered to call an hour later and she did, I thought this very person centred. OT also asked about me as unpaid carer and did I know about local services which made me feel valued.

Homecare Support Worker from STARS came to house (after ensuring no COVID symptoms) at 6.45pm and did thorough mobility assessment and physical health check. All in all the process was efficient and person centred. Leonna, the worker, was superb at putting my husband at ease. Her jovial and easy going manner calmed us both down and we both feel we were listened to and given time to speak. Call 2 days later from senior OT to check up on things and advise husband to see GP due to blood pressure, which we are doing. Plenty of time to ask questions and she spoke openly with me getting my take on how he is doing.

An excellent service which really will help avoid hospital admissions and give people support at home. Also welcomed the recognition of role of unpaid carer and knowledge of local carer services. A truly wonderful example from NHS Dumfries & Galloway of a person centred service.

Dear Waltmar

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience. I am please to ready as a result of this you have gained GP expertise to manage blood pressure, potentially our pharmacy colleagues support may also arise, and continued physical activity will help reduce your husband's risks of future falls.

The Paramedics, STARS and community colleagues have worked hard to develop the falls pathway aiming to keep people safely supported and independent at home. They will be delighted to receive copy of your feedback which I have now shared with them.

Thank you for your support as an Unpaid Carer. I trust that the contacts you received will enable your own personal needs to also be met.

Best wishes

Wendy Barron

Dear Waltmar

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. I am really proud to hear that our STARS team continue to provide person centred care despite the challenges of COVID restrictions and great to hear that we are working well with the ambulance service to ensure people can stay at home where that is the best thing for them.

I hope that your husband is on his way to recovery and that you are both managing well.

Best wishes

Joan

Dear Waltmar,

thank you for your kind comments in relation to the Ambulance Crew that attended your husband when he unfortunately had a fall.

I am glad to receive the positive feedback regarding the care and support delivered by our crews and that their referral to the 'falls' pathway of which the Scottish Ambulance Service is a key partner in, has worked so well for your husband and yourself.

I wish him well on his recovery and hope the follow up support from STARS can minimise any re-occurrence.

Kindest Regards

Kenny
