"Impossible to get appointments"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I have found it impossible to get appointments - With an ongoing, unresolved health issue since October 2020, I wanted to have an appointment to discuss status and next steps with doctor.

30/3/21 - called 45 times during morning before managing to get through and make appointment. During call appointment with doctor, she said to call her anytime to discuss issues. I told her of my experience trying to get through. Her advice was to call in afternoons as mornings very busy.

31/3/21 - I had to attend A&E through the night with health issue.

6/4/21 - Taking doctors advice, called (pm) to make an appointment to discuss next steps. Was told no appointments can be made in the afternoon. Call tomorrow morning!

7/4/21 - Called between 0830 and 0855  71 times to get an appointment. On getting through at 0855, was advised no more appointments today! Call tomorrow.

I was advised nothing could be done and I must call back tomorrow. What is the point? If you call 71 times before 0900h what chance have you  got. This is not a doctors surgery if you cannot get appointments. Appalling. When I asked for advice what to do next since I am ill, I was told nothing could be done. When I advised I would write this report and call 111  I was advised a doctor might call today and 111 was not appropriate.. I am waiting.

How do I feel? Let down, anxious, angry and ill. Patients are customers looking for service. This is a surgery that feels like it is doing you a favour but even then, that is a struggle!

I now want to find a new doctors surgery in the Newton Mearns area where this is not the norm and seek recommendations as well as a response to the above.

Dear KT Mearns

I am very sorry to read about your on-going issues contacting your GP and completely understand why you feel ‘let down, anxious, angry and ill’.

As GP's are independent contractors they have a slightly different process for dealing with complaints and feedback, therefore, I would suggest that you contact the Practice Manager to discuss the difficulties you have experienced in obtaining an appointment. However, if you don’t feel comfortable doing this, I can forward your feedback onto your GP surgery's practice manager on your behalf. If you could get in touch with me at PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with the name of the practice, and contact information that you would be happy for the GP surgery to reach you on.

You mentioned about other GP Surgeries in your area - you can more information at:

Kind Regards

Nicole
