Recently I went to the SSE Arena Vaccination Centre in Belfast to get my covid vaccine.
As I’m pregnant I knew it wouldn’t be super straightforward because recommendations are not 100% clear, but I had a recommendation from my doctor and double checked with the responsible Trust so I was hoping I wouldn’t have any issues and in general I didn’t.
I say in general because I did have to wait a bit longer and had to speak to a few people (assessment nurse, head nurse and head pharmacist) but I was fully prepared for that and they were all very nice and professional!
However while I waited for the head pharmacist a staff member that hadn’t spoken to me before and was just nearby supporting the staff started harassing me trying to convince me to not get the vaccine.
They initially asked if I really wanted it, which I found a bit invasive since they were not involved in my situation and after I said I did they would stop by every couple minutes with some additional unsolicited information such as aren’t you afraid of blood clots or what if something happens to your baby?’ Until they said the worst possible thing; that some women have had miscarriages after getting the vaccine, even though it might not have been caused by the vaccine it is still a risk, do you think is worth it?
I think they realized they crossed any boundaries by saying that and walked away and never came back. I’m glad I already had done my research and spoken to other professionals and knew this was far from true, but I still found it extremely unprofessional and made me wonder what do they say to other people specially when they could be feeling vulnerable.
By the time I was getting my vaccine they were again hovering around and still making snarky comments, which made me feel again extremely uncomfortable.
The rest of the staff was very supportive and I have only nice to things to say about them, but I can’t get over the fact that a staff member tried bullying me into changing my mind.
