"Discharged early before anticipated surgery"

About: Central Middlesex Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Ealing Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Northwick Park Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I tore a bicep distal tendon in October 2020. I attended Ealing Hospital for scans and we agreed that it would need urgent surgery as waiting too long would make repair more difficult. I completed a pre-assessment questionnaire over the phone at the beginning of December 2020 and awaited a confirmation date for surgery at the Central Middlesex Hospital - which I expected would happen within weeks.

Then we had another wave of covid so it seemed understandable that this would be delayed. I understand the pressures that the NHS has faced so have been very patient.

The orthopedics department have not been answering their phones since then. I finally managed to speak to someone today - a receptionist I think at Northwick Park - who told me that my records show me as having been discharged in early December! This is absolutely outrageous! I have received absolutely no communication regarding this and would not have known had I not made many failed calls before eventually finding out through a 'back door' channel.

I feel very upset, disgusted, outraged and betrayed over this.

Dear Sir

Thank your for letting us know about your recent experience with the Trauma and Orthopaedics team and would wish to apologise for the concern caused.

I understand you contacted the Trust yesterday regarding this issue and a member of the Trauma and Orthopaedics team has attempted to contact you today to discuss this. It would appear that you have been given incorrect information and that you have not been discharged from the care of the Trust. Hopefully a member of the team will be able to speak with you later today and provide you with a date for your planned surgery.

I am very sorry again for the obvious concern and distress caused by the misinformation you were given.

Kind regards

Peter Hare

Patient Services Manager
