"Boy, 8 years old, with shortness of breath"

About: Darent Valley Hospital / Accident and emergency Devon Road Surgery South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / NHS 111

(as a parent/guardian),

On 111 advice i took my son to a&e so he could be seen by a professional as he complained of shortness of breath. After few hours waiting , which we were prepared for that, but my son felt so unwell , a doctor checked his chest said he was fine

but also sent us for a x-ray to check his lungs.everything looked perfect and i appreciate the correct way of checking my son. finally x-ray result came and the doctor explained that he could

see a shadow on his left lung so it looked

like a viral

infection that probably was ongoing for

a while.my son didnt have any other symptoms such as

temperature or cough just this breathing issue.so we left hospital with a course of 7 days of antibiotics. all fine , really pleased with the care for my son. second day his breathing hasn’t improved and

got worst and the child became

a bit anxious as he could

not understand what was wrong with

him

and why he could not breathe properly and had that pressure on his chest. next night we called the ambulance, all our respect for

them, they explained whats going on and why his situation didnt improve , as with the antibiotics it takes at least 48 h untill start working and

see results. they also explained what to do

when he

feels like breathing is a bit difficult, checked his heart rate and the level of oxygen, all fine. really pleased with the way they were treated the case. forth day my son still not

well , not being able to take even a short walk , totally exhausted, feeling nauseous and hard to

breathe. at some point i took the decision to call again 111 thinking maybe the antibiotics prescribed are not working for him. after they went through with me

and did another assessment they advised to go a&e with him. all good , we went, very nice staff at he triage, tried to calm him

down and explained to him

that actually he can breathe, oxigen levels were very good, but my son still feeling that he cannot breathe properly. in a while we have been seen by a doctor

and from

that moment things became so

confusing fo me as a parent. He listened my son’s chest, it sounded fine for him, checked

the x-ray my son had it 4 days before, he said all

good, everything looked

good for

him, he said

he cannot see a shadow and lungs are looking as they should for a child his age. So

as he could not identify any physical problem

he said we deal

now with a child with anxiety attacks and to

refer my child

to children’s mental health department. i

wondered why , how

and why my son would

have these attacks? i asked as i was really confused why one doctor said 4 days ago that had the chest infection and he s got another opinion. he answered the child

is fine and easily can say he has anxiety attacks. i asked why he had the antibiotics for and what should i do. he recommended to

interrupt the treatment the next day and look at the other problem and he said “ i cant say what happened 4 days ago”. i left and next day we started again with the same problem. i

have contacted our local

gps and i

asked  for advice as i was totally confused. as these days there are not face to face appointments

with the gps i

had a phone call appointment with one of our gp. without asking to

actually see my son for another examination and following my description of symptoms he could not make it clear for

me, he said he does not have access to a&e files and he thought the same

i should refer him

to children’s

mental health. days went past and things are still not clear for

me, did he have a chest  infection or panic attacks? He feels better blessed him

still accusing time to time shortness of breathing and pressure on his chest. Who

to trust, first doctor, second one

or the third one???????
