"Not being allowed to visit my mum with dementia"

(as a carer),

My mum had a stroke on Tuesday was in ward 306 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, she also has vascular dementia. I am an essential visitor and have requested to get in to visit her as she had a “turn” and I was told no. My mum is distressed and cannot speak properly, explain herself properly and relies heavily on me to keep her anxiety down.

I was very upset as I was not allowed to see her she only needed 5 minutes with me to reduce her anxiety but they wouldn't even let me do that because of “the rules”. I have had both vaccinations for covid, I am tested every week at work and have lateral flow tests at home.

I was told she was fine and they would call me later if she was agitated. My mother was also asking for me when she had the “turn” but yet no one called me then.

I eventually had a very reassuring call with a staff nurse in ward 306 Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following a request to see my mum. This staff member was lovely, empathetic, reassuring and supportive. My mind is at peace now and my mum is relaxed.

I am still not allowed to visit my mother in hospital apart from accompanying her to procedures, I do feel that I should be able to visit her due to her dementia.
