My mum was admitted to AAU a few weeks ago, was quickly assessed, scanned and prepared for theatre. The surgeons sensitively explained how seriously ill she was but respected her wishes to be given every chance of recovery. The staff treated mum and I with such kindness and compassion.
Following surgery she was transferred to B11 and once again the care she received was exceptional. They made sure mum was pain free and comfortable. During the time I spent with mum in the ward they looked after me as well, ensuring I had something to eat and drink and comforted me as we realised mum had a very short time to live. The domestic staff made sure we had access to Wi Fi to allow other family members to speak to mum as they were unable to visit due to Covid restrictions. We asked if we could take her home and within 24 hours she was home, surrounded by her family and with all the equipment needed to ensure her final hours were comfortable. Thank you Senior Charge Nurse Chris, Evelyn, palliative care, the discharge team and all the staff who made this possible.
The sadness we feel is eased by the knowledge everything was done to save her and she was treated with respect, compassion and kindness by wonderful staff. Thank you all, we will be forever grateful.
