"Urgent need for a GP appointment"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a relative),

A family relative is in desperate need of an appointment with the GP.

He is 88 years old and is displaying symptoms of a neurological disorder, which we as a family believe is Dementia. He needs to see a GP in order to be referred for psychiatric assessment.

His wife recently went in to their GP practise, to ask for an appointment for her husband. She told the member of staff how confused he had been, expressing her worry and concern. She was told that a phone appointment would be arranged. When the surgery phoned, she was told that clinics for that sort of thing were closed and was advised that he was probably depressed and he was prescribed with Anti-depressants.

Unhappy with this, his wife phoned back to complain. She spoke with the receptionist, who said that they would pass it on. She hasn't heard back from the surgery.

This is in no way good enough. He needs a consultation with the Doctor, face to face.

This is an emergency situation, as he poses a risk to himself and , potentially, those around him. We are concerned that his wife will become unable to cope with this alone for much longer. We urgently need a GP'S appointment where he will be initially assessed and referred for Psychiatric assessment. We need him to receive a brain scan in order for him to be officially diagnosed.

As a family, we feel let down and worry about the safety of them both.

Dear JAS20

I am so sorry to hear about your relative’s experience with their GP Surgery.

As GP’s are independent contractors with their own feedback systems and complaints processes I would suggest contacting the Practice Manager to ask for a second opinion. If the family don’t feel comfortable doing this we can contact the GP Practice on your behalf. If you could email PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with the name of the practice and your relative’s details (with your relative’s permission).

I understand that you are worried about your relative and their wife. You can call the 24 hour freephone Dementia Helpline on 0808 808 3000 for further information or advice. You can also find more information on the Alzheimer Scotland website www.alzscot.org and specific information for carers at www.carers.org and from the Carers Support Line on 0141 353 6504.

Kind Regards

Nicole
