I fell in my garden and knew I broke my ankle as I heard it crack. I called the ambulance and was attended by two caring professional paramedics. I was taken to Royal stoke hospital A&E where I was seen by a competent nurse practitioner who prior to the x-ray said that it was likely I broke my ankle. After the x-ray i was informed that I had a 'nasty break' in 3 places. I was shown the x-rays and informed I was to be seen by the orthopaedics that evening and it was probable it would need pin and plating.
After having a back slab I waited, and waited to be seen by the orthopedics. Apparently my xrays were reviewed and I was sent home to attend fracture clinic 5 days later.
I was sent home with two crutches and pack of painkillers.
5 days later I arrived at Stoke Royal and was told by reception to book in on the appointment machine. The time said 10.02am, my appointment was 10. At fracture clinic, which I now call cattle clinic I was told to take a seat. I waited till 11.15 when I was called to take another seat in a corridor- no explanation was given. I waited for what? Not sure. A staff nurse came to me and said the doctor wants me to have a below knee full plaster (resin). I was given a wheelchair at that point and wheel into, I imagine, a treatment room. I stated that I thought my ankle need pin and plating. The staff nurse explained that apparently I had an "undisplaced fracture" that didn't require pinning. Then explained that it is like a cracked China cup that can still hold water and be used. I was pleased to hear this and sent messages to family and friends who were praying for me. Good news!
While the nurse and assistant were preparing my leg for the cast a staff member who I assumed was the doctor came and touched my foot asking can I feel the sensation. He asked how I sustained the injury. He then stood by and watched the plastering procedure.
After that I was wheeled to x-ray for my 3rd set of x-rays. I waited. After waiting, some time I was wheeled to another section and waited.
Had the x-rays and was wheeled back to the corridor and waited. Apparently my x-ray needed reviewing by the doctor who saw me. Which doctor? Not sure.
By that time patient numbers had gone down, I think afternoon clinic was about to start. I was waiting. I asked a HCA, who apologize to me and said the doctor knew I was waiting but they didn't know where that doctor was. My mobile phone charge was below 10%. I rang my husband to collect me- our home is a half hour drive to the hospital. Another patient who had their x-ray after me was taken into a room in the corridor to see, I imagine, a doctor. That upset me. I'm waiting, my leg is hurting, throbbing in pain, I'm hungry. I asked the staff nurse 'couldn't any doctor review the x-rays?' This nurse asked a nearby doctor who looked at them, then me and then ignored us. The nurse later said that they had said the doctor who saw me originally had to review the x-rays. I was close to tears, but sucked it up. Then my saviour arrived, my husband. Boy was I happy to see him!! I wanted to get out of that place. It's the worst experience I've had for a very long time.
When we arrived home, half an hour later I received a call from the doctor, asking where I was and if I was still in the hospital. I was at home. I was then told that my foot needed a pin and plating in 2 places. I replied that I was told it's an undisplaced fracture. They asked who had told me that, and that it was my choice. They then mentioned that the second thing was a risk of embolism and that I would need daily injections or tablets. They told me to come back to the clinic the following week for another set of x-rays. That will be 10 days after sustaining multiple fractures in my ankle and still no agreed plan of treatment.
I have no confidence in the 'care' from the orthopedic team at all. I will be contacting private orthopaedic consultancy.
"Still no agreed plan of treatment"
