"Covid journey"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Accidents & Emergency Antrim Area Hospital / Intensive Care Unit Antrim Area Hospital / Ward A4 Medical Antrim Area Hospital / Ward C7 Haematology/Renal Nightingale Wards / Nightingale 1 Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a service user),

I was taken to hospital in early January by paramedics.  My dad found me in the house.  I remember being in the ambulance with Marie one of the paramedics.  I don't remember much after that.  When I came round a bit I remember the doctors saying they were going to have to tube me.  I was getting 100% oxygen through a big mask.  I took a picture of myself but I don't remember taking it.

From C7, they took me to ICU.  All I can remember from ICU is the hallucinations.  When I started coming round I was very cold all the time.  I was on dialysis at this point.  My kidneys started functioning again.  The hardest part for me was being awake and seeing people dying.  I heard a phone call from a priest giving someone their last rights.  I cried sore.  But I was thankful it wasn't me.

I had a tracheostomy and I wasn't able to speak.  I wasn't able to communicate.  I felt like I was pinned to the bed because my limbs weren't working.  It was very frustrating.

The staff in ICU were amazing.  I couldn't of got better care.  And I want to reassure people who lost family members in ICU that they were never alone.  The nurses were praying and held their hands.

Jenny the nurse had to cut my hair because there was a big mat in it.  She cried when she did it.  Yvonne, Liz, Claire, Amy, Aaron, Duncan and Ryan, Bronagh and Shauna, I remember them.  A special shout out to the Army Medics.  They were brilliant.

After ICU, I was transferred to A4.  It was so busy.  They kept forgetting about my dinner, I felt always left until last.  Nicola, Melanie and Clara were great. Janine, Angela, Samantha and Mia I remember being very helpful and attentive. Nicola was amazing,  she rang up to sort my food out and showered me and shaved my legs.  Made me feel a million dollars because I hadn't had a shower in so long.

I was quite lonely as I was in a room on my own.  The hardest part was not being able to have visitors.

I went to Whiteabbey Nightingale for one night and took an infection and had to go back to Antrim ED.  They were very good.  I went back to C7.  The staff in C7 were lovely.   had the same staff for three days. Nicola and William. I was getting IV antibiotics and IV fluids

A4 could do with more staff.  It took so long for them to answer buzzers.

I was then transferred back to Whiteabbey Nightingale.  We had a bit of craic on the way over with the ambulance crew.

When I got to Whiteabbey, it was so welcoming.  Nothing seems to be a problem here.

Physios see me every day and give me exercises.  I also see the OTs.  I can walk on my own with assistance of one staff member.  I'm going to the kitchen today with the OTs to see what I can do.

The ward is spotless.  I see a doctor every day.  I'm having a lot of bloods taken today.

I'm really happy here.  It's a lot friendlier and staff are attentive.

Thank you for your Care opinion. I am the Lead Nurse responsible for C7 and I am very humbled to hear you talk about attentive and lovely staff. I know how hard they work each day to ensure excellent patient care and I am very glad to hear you have had a good experience there. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. It is very important to all of us that patients have a space to have their opinion heard. I know that my colleagues across the hospital will want to respond to your other comments etc. But from me - thank you. I hope you continue to do well in your recovery and I hope that the nightingale continues to succeed in helping you in your journey to recovery.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding the care that you received as a patient in ICU. I was sorry to hear that you felt cold and were unable to communicate this to our staff. I am glad to hear that you are rehabilitating well in Whiteabbey Hospital and I hope that you were able to cook something delicious today. Best wishes for the future.

Regards Kay

Dear Service user

I am the general manager for ICU and wanted to thank you for your kind comments around the ICU nursing team. It is very difficult for the nursing teams dealing with patients dying in the absence of family members who cannot be at their loved ones bedside as a direct result of the covid 19 pandemic. I am so sorry that you as a patient witnessed other patients passing away as a result of the covid 19. This has been a particularly challenging year for everyone and I am so glad to hear that you are recuperating and doing well in the nightingale facility as this unit has been established to support rehabilitation away from the busyness of the acute hospitals. I hope you are soon back to full health thanks Pauline McGaw

Dear Service User,

Thank you for your taking time to share you experience with us. As the Service Manager for Respiratory I will pass on your kind words to the staff you mentioned by name in A4. I am sorry that your meals were always last. Ward staffing has been challenging at times due to sickness during the pandemic, however staffing levels have now improved. I hope you continue to improve and return home soon

Dear EMS80

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with using our services.

If you feel up to it and if you can remember, I'd be grateful if you could contact me at careopinion.admin@nias.hscni.net and provide me with some additional detail on that first journey so I can let the right Marie know that she was memorable, even in those circumstances.

I'm so pleased to hear that the crew helped lift your spirits during your transfer to Whiteabbey.

I hope your stay in Whiteabbey soon sees you fit and well enough to return home and your recovery continues.

Rachel
