About: Brand Street Resource Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

My family member is cared for in the community under a compulsory treatment order. About two years ago they got a new keyworker who expressed a lack of interest in keeping the family involved, despite the family having to step in on many occasions to rescue our loved one from various adverse events and circumstances. The police came to us looking for our loved one, but it transpired that they had just gone on holiday abroad. Despite this holiday being approved by staff, they were unable to make this known to the police, but they told the family when we asked.  We carried on as normal, with communication being one-way from us, as sometimes happened. About six months later we were advised by the Housing Association that they had not been resident all this time and the tenancy had been lost. They had not returned from holiday. We approached their team who confirmed this. Alone, abroad, unmedicated, uncared-for, friendless, they came to serious harm. We feel excluded, angry, distressed, and fearful for their future in a system which is not capable of configuring itself to provide basic safety and a decent way of life to our loved one, despite the family's willingness to help.

Dear Washbucket

Thank you for taking the time to share your family's experience. I was very saddened to hear how difficult recent years have been for you all and in particular was concerned to hear that your family member has come to serious harm.

You raise a number of important issues in your post which I would like to look into. Please contact me on 211 6602 if you wish to discuss further.

Kind Regards

Dr James Loudon
