"GP triage issues and Receptionists providing responses"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as a service user),

I am recovering after contracting Covid-19 at the start of February. I called the Surgery to ask for some health advice as I was advised that I would no longer be served cough medicine over the counter at the local pharmacy due to the number of times it had been purchased. I explained that whilst I was not getting worse, I wasn't getting better either and was looking to discuss some of my issues and symptoms with a Nurse or Doctor to ensure I was doing everything I could to recover as quickly as possible.

The Receptionist took my details and I provided a brief overview of my pre-exisiting conditions and what specifically was concerning me about contracting Covid-19. The Receptionist advised I would be triaged with a Nurse likely to call me back later the same day. An hour later a different Receptionist called me back and basically told me there was nothing they could do, to keep "it" till it got better, to monitor my breathing and if it gets worse call 101. They also went on to tell me that I shouldn't leave the house as I may still be positive.

I advised at the time I was not comfortable discussing these matters with a Receptionist let alone one who lives near me and that I know. I also felt it was inappropriate for them to suggest I should stay at home as I am fortunate enough to have lateral flow tests at home and had ensured this was negative before I left the house (not that I needed to explain that to them).

I was left feeling upset and angry that I wasn't worth a medical professionals time to reach out to someone who was obviously still unwell from Covid but not unwell enough to require hospitalisation. It felt like the Receptionist was dismissing me and my symptoms and over stepping a mark by calling me and providing this advice. I felt like it would have been more beneficial to google my symptoms and read the advice from a lifestyle magazine article because that's how much it felt like I mattered to the Nurse and GP. On the day this happened I felt worthless and disappointed that I didn't deserve to speak to someone all whilst feeling quite unwell.
Six weeks after contracting Covid-19 I am reaching out to my workplace occupational health department as I know I will be taken seriously, provided adequate advice and help with creating a plan for improving my health and getting back to normal. I am unlikely to speak to my GP in the future about this as it feels like as soon as they hear the word Covid it is the reason they need to provide you with a set of excuses to get rid of you to someone else.

Dear Lilac Gene Link

I am sorry to hear of the difficult and stressful time you have had recently both with your ill health and with your experience at your GP Practice.

GP’s are independent contractors and are therefore responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns a person may have about their service; they are not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion. I'd invite you to contact the Practice Manager if you'd like a direct response about the service you experienced.

I am pleased to hear that you have contacted your Occupational Health department for support and advice which I hope they have been able to provide you with.

I wish you well for a full recovery and return to better health.

kind regards
