Had a visit about my husbands wheelchair. Wee had this wheelchair for years and it was okay not perfect but okay , the back didnt tilt. When the staff member was here they said he cant have it any more as he cant operate it. Thats the rules. It's not about the carer/ wife its all about the disabled person.
I totally agree he cant operate it but I can , otherwise he doesnt get out. So I asked for assisted control on the back instead of me walking along side..that was the perfect solution.
So this person insisted it was getting taken off him and we are getting a manual assisted wheelchair. I told her we already have a manual one and it doesnt ever get used because I cant push it and I want to keep the electric one and have controls on the back for me to operate. Simple you may think but NO.
I was then told there has to be a difference of 6 stone in order for me to have electric assisted controlled wheelchair. My husband is taken out by ME every day it's not raining. He doesnt like the rain. This is the highlight of our day and it's also for MY mental stability. Stuck in the house all day everyday is not good for any of us. I take him out in the car, even through covid . It's not healthy for him or I to be inactive.
The new wheelchair arrived. Its tiny. Cant get the hoist round his legs without struggling. It has a backrest that goes back but the wheelchair tips up when I'm behind it. I struggled to lift him back up after it had been engaged. engineer fitted two things to stop it tilting back. I have a bad back and I just cant do this. It has No brakes so if I'm going down a hill I've absolutely no chance of stopping it take off. So I have to go down backwards. Again i have a sore back with all the lifting and laying i have to do with him. I'm out of breath all the time trying to use this. Going up the hill is a total and utter nightmare as I'm almost horizontal pushing it. When i get to the top i have to sit down and rest. You may be thinking aye right shes making this up, but i can assure you it's TRUE come and see me using it.
Staff member who did the assessment said I can just buy a battery pack there not expensive i looked into it, but unfortunately wee dont have that sort of spare cash. I dont work because hes 24/7care. They are getting some charity to contact us. I dont want charity I just want the electric wheelchair back with assisted controls at the back.
The engineer came today and he CANT fit brakes. Bless him he tried and tried. Lovely man. Very helpful. He also said there still wont be enough room for brakes even if I get a battery pack because of the head rest. The brakes and the controls. So the wheelchair that I had did a great job but didnt have controls on the back. We used it every day. We went out everyday when it wasnt raining. If it rained we went to the park not everyday. The wheelchair we now have WONT be used ever so you would be better taking that off us as well. And my husband and I will be confined to the house. How is any of this helping us live a happy fulfilling life.
