"Mentalization Based Treatment Introduction (MBTi) experience"

About: Forensic mental health / Low secure services

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have recently ended the MBTi group at the Mandala centre. I feel like I have learned loads about attachment and what MBT Therapy would/will be like. It helped too to meet people with similar issues. I initially did online MBTi but didn’t find this as helpful because I was very detached and dissociated. There were also issues in the group where I felt certain group members dominated and I felt this wasn’t addressed. I feel I should have chosen a in person group from the start, but that’s my fault.

I found the facilitators super helpful and easy to understand what they were talking about (more so with the in-person group).
I wish it hadn’t taken over a year to get into a group!

Thank you so much for your constructive feedback, this is always appreciated and used to inform any changes or developments to the service.

It is positive to hear that your participation and engagement in MBTi has been a learning process in understanding more about attachment and Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) and that meeting other people with similar issues has held meaning and importance to you.

We are very keen to understand peoples experiences of the online groups, as we need to consider if we would offer both online and face to face groups in the future, so hearing your feedback will help us in our thinking about this. What is helpful is that you have tried both and so have been able compare the different experiences.

The whole service has had a very steep learning curve in terms of facilitating on line groups, so your feedback will help develop the delivery of this in the future should it still remain an option.

The service has worked on reducing the time from referral to assessment which has been successful and is now working on reducing the wait from assessment to group start.

What you should take credit for is the fact you maintained the motivation for that period of waiting, this shows your commitment to wanting to develop yourself.

I wish you well with your future development and growth and thank you once again for the detailed feedback.

Thank you for this feedback, it was really helpful to consider your views in our recent review of the MBTi programme.

As Yvonne mentioned above, we have worked hard to reduce wait for accessing our service and we have made inroads to address/reduce the wait for treatment, however our focus has been on having minimal wait from MBTi into MBT Therapy to really ensure we build on the foundations set in MBTi.

We have listened to feedback and have found that the majority of service users have found face to face groups more engaging and so have recently only offered face to face MBTis. This also makes it easier for building rapport and bonds with other service users, supporting a mentalizing culture within the group, supporting helpful challenge from group members and facilitators. This is also something we will strengthen through the supervision of MBTi groups.

We remain open to offering online groups for certain groups where travelling to a group venue is not possible and we will continue to develop this as the service need indicates.

Best wishes, Louisa
