"Frustrated by lack of options from GP"

About: Friary House Surgery Pathfields Medical Group

(as the patient),

I have been suffering with unexplained pain for four years and have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. However I have also developed fatty lumps and lipomas throughout my body.

GPs regularly tell me that some people just get them but they cause me severe pain. I cannot walk or straighten my arms and legs.

After doing my own research I came across Dercums disease and have tried to discuss this with various GPs. One GP told me it can’t be because it’s incredibly rare. Another two have told me that even if it is there is no treatment anyway other than removal of painful lipomas.

I was in accident and emergency recently and was told that my blood results have always been abnormal and they can’t understand why the GP is not investigating more. He says they have never been normal and it is obvious I have something wrong. Saw a consultant who is writing to my new GP to ask them to carry out further referrals to rheumatology and dermatology.

I live alone I can’t work and without a diagnosis how can I access support for help with day to day living? It has gotten so bad I actually took an overdose last November but still am trying to get a GP to even explore the illness with me. I’m worried as this is a progressive illness and has even led to some people having to use wheelchairs to get around. Do you have any suggestions please?

Hi Robbie

Thanks for your feedback - please do message us direct regarding this - an econsult is a good place to start - please put my name on the econsult (Dr James Boorer) and I'll pick this.

I think some of the advice is correct - lipomas are very common, fibro is very common and dercums is very very rare. Sadl there is no specific treatment for Dercums but I can take a look. If you have abnormal bloods I'm confident we would have looked at these in detail but please do send an econsult in mentioning my name and I will be in touch to discuss.

Best wishes

James

I presume this complaint is predominantly about Pathfields as the patient has only been registered at Friary House Surgery since February. If there needs to be further discussions please contact the surgery directly.

Update posted by Robbie2304 (the patient)

Thanks for the reply from Pathfields but I am no longer with your surgery as I was in dispute with one of your Drs who didn’t believe I was in pain, and did not want to look at the details of my symptoms.

This dispute was why I left your surgery after receiving a written warning without even getting the chance to put my side across.
