"Neurology"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Neurology

(as a service user),

I've had ongoing neck pain, tinnitus, bladder urgency and hand (2 fingers) numbness since at least mid 2019. A neck scan done in mid 2020 showed mild to moderate changes from C2 to C7 eg, stenosis, osteophyte bars, canal narrowing. The wearing is moderate at one point, where my spinal cord is touched. My GP gave me this info.

I sense that neurology have thought my neck pain is imaginary but I've seen an osteopath who says that I've put up with the pain for so long, my neck and upper back muscles have stiffened and tightened ++. I go there to get advice and exercises on helping with strengthening my neck/upper back.

Neurology told me this week everything is fine - 'very mild changes'.

The neurologist did a couple of eye related checks - one which should be done in the dark but was done in full lighting conditions and another where a patient is meant to respond if experiencing double vision but this question was not asked; makes me question the overall quality of the whole appointment and conclusion.

I'm not usually one for surgical or pharmaceutical intervention but do like to be given full facts so that I can make an informed decision. The osteopath will help with the neck pain but not the bladder issue. I gave their painkillers a go in 2020 but they left me unable to function so was off sick for a few weeks. I do not wish to try them again, hence seeking help from the osteopath.

The neurologist said my hand numbness is 'normal'; the bladder problem was not addressed satisfactorily either. If bladder urgency and loss of control increases in frequency, I can see that I'll need to seek private help.

Update posted by Pinga's Mum (a service user)

Dear Ms Burt,

Thank you for your reply.

I've delayed writing so that I could assess the outcome of my non-nhs treatment. It may be early days but the manipulation of my spine has shown a small improvement with my bladder symptoms. My instinct had said that the bladder urgency was due to my spine and not 'urology' related as suggested by the neurologist/s. I also took advice from an online neurologist who advised that I seek a second opinion, as bladder urgency is a 'red flag'.

Had I not gone elsewhere, my symptoms would most likely have become worse. When an MRI report states that wearing of the spine is 'touching spinal cord', am I really going to ignore that, as the neurologists seem to want me to, especially with my prior bladder symptoms?

I shall continue with my private care as it's exhausting not being listened to (by medical staff, not management).

Best regards,

Pingas Mum
